Starlight In The Valley
Description:
Amtraks Coast Starlight races through the foothills of the Salinas Valley on its southbound journey. The train was running right on schedule, due to arrive in Paso Robles at 1:57 PM. The train is led by engines 168 and 38, and has just passed the town of Gonzales.

The southbound Coast Starlight winds through the Salinas River Valley near Welby. Welby is an unincorporated community south of King City, home to a couple small businesses and a 7-Eleven. The train is led by two of Amtraks venerable P42DCs.

Southbound at Somavia
Description:
Amtrak #11, the southbound Coast Starlight, flies across Somavia Road near Chualar. The train, led by Amtrak 168, is clocking 70 MPH on this relatively flat stretch of the Coast Subdivision. Todays train is made up two GE P42s, a pair of Superliner I sleepers, a Superliner II diner, Superliner II coach, Superliner I observation lounge, and two Superliner I coaches on the rear.

Amtrak #11 Southbound
Description:
Amtrak 168 leads the southbound Coast Starlight through Welby, California. Welby is a small settlement south of King City, a former timetable stop on the Southern Pacific. This was my first time shooting here, so we pulled off the freeway and parked on the side of Cattlemen Road. Here, P42s 168 and 38 lead their train across Wildhorse Road.

Southbound Starlight
Description:
Amtrak P42s lead the southbound Coast Starlight through Bradley, California. The hills in the background are home to oil wells and cattle ranches for the most part. Bradley is a small community of 90 or so people, settled in the mid 1880s when the Southern Pacific Railroad built through this area. Today, Bradley is the site of a siding on the Coast Line, and the bridge over the Salinas River is just south of town. #11 is running right on time today, and will arrive at her next stop in Paso Robles in just over 20 minutes.

Starlight At Sunset
Description:
The northbound Coast Starlight, led by two venerale P42s, glides into San Jose Diridon right on schedule at the end of the day. The two big General Electric behemoths, each with 4,200 horsepower, have just raced their train through the Salinas Valley, making 79 MPH all the way. Amtrak 38, the lead engine, was built in late 1996.
