PRR 2217, EF-22, 1964 |
| Description: |
4th Street. Here is the fourth of four successive original photos that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 15 August 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2217, #2211, #2219, #2206, and #2245. All are EF-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #2217, #2211, #2219, and #2206 were built in March of 1963, while #2245 was built in May of 1963. In this context, they're about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with an 80-car TrucTrain bound for Enola and points East. The cabin car is #477866. At the right are two westbound freight trains awaiting orders to proceed, along with two passenger cars marshalled for reconditioning in the PRR's Passenger Car Shops behind them. Standing tall is the steel Water Tower, last vestige of the Age of Steam. Visible in the center distance, beyond the 7th Street Bridge, are some of the PRR's 12th Street Shop buildings. Photo taken from the 4th Street Footbridge. |
